JC: So who are your favorite superheroes? GB: X-Men. Are there X-girls? There are four of them: Storm, Jean, Jubilee and Rogue. Those aren't superheroes: those are hairdressers at Fantastic Sam's! Tell me about each of them. What's Storm's power? She can control the weather. How does that help her? I don't know. What about Jubilee? She can blow up machines. That would make her rather jubilant. What about Rogue? She wears this glove all the time, and do you know why? She takes it off and absorbs people's strength. Only when the glove is off? Yes. That's why she has to wear it all the time so she can't just be like, "Hi!" (Shakes my hand.) What if she has an itch? She can take it off and itch herself. Are they like shower mitts -- like loofah? They're yellow Do you think her glove is in any way related to Michael Jackson wearing his glove? No. Do you know who Michael Jackson is? No. Oh. What is Jean Grey? I don't know. She seems kind of plain. Is she? She doesn;t fight. She doesn't have a costume. But Jubilee, she never wears a costume. She's naked? NO! She wears her original clothes. You have this action figure here of the Invisible Woman. What do you think about her? I don't think she/s really that great because then her friends don't know where she is. Do you think she feels a pressure to make herself invisible? I'm not really sure. Is there an Invisible Man? Well, there's Flams. Who's Flame? He can turn himself into fire. You know, the basic fire trick. So there are certain powers that are standards. Well, like flying. Do you like Wonder Woman? I've never really watched her movie. If you could be a superhero what would your power be? I'm not sure. I wouldn't want to be a superhero. Why do you think we need superheroes? Well, to save the day. |

Gabriel Xavier Bly is a 3rd grader in Mrs. Mollson's class at Garfield Elementary School in Lakewood, Ohio. His favorite class is science. When he grows up, he wants to be a scientist-- not unlike Professor Xavier of the X-Men. Gabriel also loves superheroes, so much so that his collection of superhero action figures was showcased, alongside the art of our own fair editor Christa -- at the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art's exhibition Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: Superheroes in Contemporary Art. I talked with Gabe about X-Men and wonder women -- like his mom, artist Lyz Bly. |
